Covers Round Up: We BUSY Edition

Running on empty.

Hey all. Sorry for the lack of posting, Erin and I have been busy, busy, busy. The good news is, Erin, Danny, and Marty are coming out here in just about two weeks (!!!!) for Burgerama and we are going to have lots of fun stories to share and Erin and I are going to have a “serious business meeting” (see: talk over tacos or while picnicking at the Getty) and sort of discuss where this blog is going, what sort of focus we want it to have, etc. etc, because it has been all over the place, which is awesome; we are both exploring things that are interesting to us and we hope are interesting to you.

Anyhoo. If there are any topics you have read on here that you really liked, please let us know in the comments. If not, feel free to check out a buttload of cover songs I have done write ups for in the past month or so:

>> MORRISMCCLYMONT Gets Straight Up Scary with “Nothing Compares 2 U”
>>Mø is your new favorite artist. Trust me. Check out her stellar cover of Spice Girls “Say You’ll Be There.
>>An interesting early 2000s-esque dance club take on The Police’s Roxanne by Nadia Ali.
>>Angel Haze straight up killing it with Beyonce’s “Drunk In Love.”
>>Jagwar Ma (also one of your new favorite bands, didn’t you know?) rocks board shorts and the Arctic Monkeys “Why’d You Only Call Me When You’re High?”
>>A stripped down but lovely rendition of Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy.”
>>ASTR is this lovely Brooklyn duo and their take on Drake’s “Hold On, We’re Going Home,” is dreamy.
>>CHVRCHES does Janelle Monae’s “Tightrope” and Ms. Monae digs it.
>>Because there can never be too many Beyonce covers, here is IYES take on the queen’s “Crazy in Love.”

You guys. You guys. YOU GUYS.

It’s chilly in LA. It might even RAIN today! And, to top it off, American Horror Story: Coven premieres tonight! Our mama sent me a bunch of Halloween decorations so I am going to deck out my house and make it spooky scary. Don’t worry – there will be pictures soon. Halloween is my jam.

Can today get any better? Probably not. Maybe these covers will be the cherry on top, though.

* DIIV and Sky Ferreira Cover Cat Power’s “Nude As The News” After Arrest
* Jared Leto Gets Emotional with Rihanna’s “Stay”

Covers Round Up: Busy, busy, busy.

Pretty much me. Equally witty as Lizzie McGuire's cartoon counterpart as well.

I have had what feels like 20 projects dropped on me at once and while I am excited and pumped, I also feel like I am jumping from task to task and not giving everything I can to each individual project. It can be a little difficult when you are ready to hunker down with one project and then another one, even if it is a small one that will only take a half hour, all of a sudden has priority and you have to do a complete 180 and refocus your attention.

Anyway. It is good to be busy. Even though there are moments where I am a bit overwhelmed, I remind myself that just a little over a year ago, I was working three part time jobs, didn’t have a solid group of friends like I do now, and, in general, was just going a little bit off the deep end. I have refocused a lot of my life this year and it feels good.

I don’t know where this post is going…I am pretty sleep deprived and mapping out the rest of my day in my head. Oh! Cover songs. Yes, even through all this activity, I have managed to write a few articles for Cover Me Songs, because I am just that good. I am really into High High’s cover of “A Real Hero.” Feel free to let me know which of these is your favorite in the comments below.

*BOY Goes Back to Highschool with Air’s “Playground Love”
*Fiona Apple Fights Factory Farming with Willy Wonka’s “Pure Imagination”
*High Highs Turns Out Romantic Cover of That Song from ‘Drive’
*Kings of Leon Bring Bluesy Approach to Robyn’s “Dancing On My Own”
*Cover Me Q&A: What cover song made you reevaluate your feelings about the original?

Covers Round Up: Come At Me Fall Edition

Come At Me Fall

1. Vintage Velvet Dress from nanometer’s Etsy shop. 2. American Horror Story: Coven. If you’re not excited for this we can’t be friends. 3. The Night Vale Podcast. This has just been getting crazy popular and for good reasons. 4. Twin Peaks. I pretty much reference this all the time, but it has a certain autumn feel to me.

Los Angeles has experienced its first bit of cooler weather so I have very, very quickly jumped into fall mode, despite the promise of 85 degree weather next week. Fall is my favorite (and maybe it’s Erin’s too?) because A. our birthdays are in the fall; B. It is so fit for spooky and fucking weird things, which are my favorites and C. because duh fall it’s the greatest. To accompany the beginning of this eery, chilly, wonderful season, here are a few things I have been obsessing over that I feel fit the spooky autumn vibe along with a few cover songs I have written about over the past week.

*MS MR Gets Sultry Covering Arctic Monkeys “Do I Wanna Know?”
*Simon Pegg and Nick Frost Get Silly with “Get Lucky”
*Tree Gets Weird with Radiohead’s “Karma Police”
*FIDLAR Turns Up Nick Cave’s “Red Right Hand”

Covers Round Up: Back to Brunette

Back and it feels so good.

That’s me. Today. With brunette hair.

Fall is around the corner and real talk, keeping up with manic panic every three days was a hassle. Did I have fun trying new colors, being “that girl,” and being cat-called as Katy Perry? Yes to all but the last one. Cat calls are the worst.

My brunette hair and I are really happy back together. When I told people I was going to get back with my brunette self, some people were hesitant. One person even threatened to stop being my friend (he says he was joking, but WE ALL KNOW YOU WERE SERIOUS, COLIN.), but you know what? Brunette is good to me. It looks pretty rad on me. And I don’t have to do a ton of maintenance with it. When I was rinsing out the boxed dye from my hair last night, I listened to Brian McKnight’s “Back at One,” and was like “Yes, hair! We can do it! It’s undeniable that we belong together!”

Anyhoo, I am probably going to ramble about my new/old hair a lot, so here are some covers to get you through said gushing.

*Franz Ferdinand Goes Acoustic with Grimes’ “Oblivion”
*Biffy Clyro Goes Mellow Covering Vampire Weekend’s “Diane Young”
*Toro Y Moi Is an ‘Office’ Fanboy with Deep Cut Cover Song
*Twin Shadow Introduces New Cover Series with 10cc’s “I’m Not In Love”
*Kitty (Pryde) Surprises with Sky Ferreira’s “Everything is Embarrassing”
*Bat For Lashes Honors One of Her Favorite Ladies with Fleetwood Mac’s “Rhiannon”
